The African American Male Research Initiative and the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin held the first-annual The Black Student-Athlete Conference focusing on: Challenges and Opportunities, a three-day summit from January 7-9, 2015, in Austin, Texas. The summit was a three-day gathering to openly examine and candidly discuss the numerous and complex issues surrounding the black student-athlete. Scholars, coaches, conference commissioners, athletic directors, academic advisors, student affairs professionals, principals, present and former student-athletes, journalists, and others were invited. This inaugural meeting was a “must-attend” event for anyone involved in the life of the black student-athlete. This summit constituted the most comprehensive national forum on issues related to the black experience within amateur athletics.
