Faculty and staff play an integral part in making sure that students receive their accommodations, and every semester there are faculty and staff that go above and beyond the call of duty to help students with disabilities. To recognize these outstanding members of the UT community, SSD students nominate faculty and staff who have made a significant contribution to their lives as students at the University of Texas.
For the Spring 2013 semester, SSD received 35 nominations. As a token of appreciation, honorees receive an engraved clock and a letter of recogntition in appreciation of their efforts on behalf of those with disabilities. Below are some excerpts from the students’ nominations.
“Because of his encouragement, I gained confidence in myself, which has sometimes been a struggle for me because of the frustration of my disability. As a result, I have excelled in the course and know that I can do anything I set my mind to.”
“He was always available to speak with me about my grades and how I could do better. He managed an enormous course but was always there when I had questions.”
“She was always attentive to any accommodation I might need. She actually anticipated what accommodations I might require to better incorporate me in her class. She removed barriers so I could learn and participate in the class as much as possible. She made me feel welcomed and a valuable student with equal rights to learn.”
“From the time I gave him my accommodation letter he went out of his way to make sure that I was getting the material I needed and was very aware of making the class accessible (I give him a lot of credit for taking the time to do this in a class that was over 120 students). The concern he had for students was clear and he truly took the time to make the class accessible for everyone.
