When working with someone who has a visual disability, it is important to give verbal directions and descriptions to allow better access and understanding.
Giving specific instructions such as “the checkout is about 10 feet ahead of you on your left” is much more helpful than pointing or giving general directions such as “It’s over there”.
People with disabilities are people first. Rather than focusing on labels, diagnoses, or perceived limitations, see people as individuals with unique goals, challenges, hopes, and dreams…just like anyone else.
