Texas Advanced Computing Center Partners with IE for Summer Grant
The IE Pre-Graduate School Internship (IE) program shared expertise and best practices this summer with the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), The University of Texas at Austin’s campus run research facility in software and technology systems, helping train graduate students to be mentors. The IE program has created an effective model that serves to introduce, empower and support undergraduate students in the pursuit of graduate studies. For many undergraduate students the idea of graduate school is both unfamiliar and daunting, but the IE model helps mitigate the unknown by engaging undergraduate students through graduate student mentorship and introducing students to the rigors of research and professional possibilities. This summer that proven model became an integral part to TACC’s work. IE program director, Tommy Darwin spearheaded the collaboration organizing workshops, facilitating trainings and acting as an on-call advisor for graduate students in the program.
IE joined the efforts of TACC to attract more graduate students to the STEM fields, an area that struggles to recruit a diverse makeup of students. Diversity within STEM graduate studies is a goal of both IE and TACC, seeking to expose traditionally underserved communities of students as well as more American students to the discipline of research and academic opportunities within STEM related graduate programs.
Through the resources and expertise of IE, TACC was able to train graduates mentors to break down the discipline of graduate study. IE hopes to continue to support programs like TACC in the future, sharing its philosophy and pragmatic program to empower students of diverse backgrounds to take ownership of their education and cultivate an experience that honors their interests, strengths and aspirations beyond college. IE will continue their work this fall working with schools and programs across The University of Texas campus. For more information visit http://moody.utexas.edu/ie.
