Abriendo Brecha Conference to Address Race, Refuge and Resistance
Event: Nonprofit leaders, scholars, students and community members will discuss

Background: The 2017 Abriendo Brecha Conference, titled “What is Sanctuary?” will focus on a range of topics regarding race, refuge and resistance. The annual event is sponsored by the DDCE’s Social Justice Institute.
Topics include, recent ICE raids in Austin, anti-immigrant and anti-Islam executive orders, Texas Senate Bill 4 (anti-sanctuary bill) and the grassroots fight for Austin to become a sanctuary city.
Looking beyond the limits of policy and the juridical remedies, the conference will be a space to discuss innovative, activist-based forms of creating refuge and resistance.
Speakers from the following organizations and Institutions will be in attendance: ICE Out of Austin, Grassroots Leadership, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, City of Austin, Youth Rise Texas, University Leadership Initiative, among others.
