The People of DDCE: Brandy Belk, UIL Assistant Athletic Director
Meet Brandy Belk, assistant athletic director at the University Interscholastic League (UIL). In this role she focuses on administrating and coordinating athletic department programs, events and rules for member schools.
She brings a wealth of experience from her four years as assistant athletic director for Lake Travis School District as well as her career in coaching basketball and cross country at middle and high school levels.
During her first year on the job, she has found that every day offers a new learning experience.
“I came from a one high school district where I could get all the answers pretty quickly,” Belk says. If I didn’t have them, I could get them quickly. Here it is just so huge that my head is spinning. I ask a lot of questions; all day long I ask questions. After a year, I’ll have it all behind me. Not that I’m going to know everything, by any stretch, but at least I’ll have the experience of a year behind me.”
Although she’s new to the job, her relationship with UIL dates back to her early years in middle and high school sports.
“My favorite UIL memory was probably playing basketball in high school,” says Belk, who competed in track and cross country and played basketball at Buda Hays High School. “There are so many great memories. We had a really good team, and we made it to the regional finals.”
Looking back at her time in middle and high school sports, she will never forget her first coach—Coach Fitzter—who helped her through a difficult time.
“About a month ago I got an email from her with a picture of us, from when I was in eighth grade, and a nice note,” Belk adds. “I lost my mom when I was in sixth grade and my life was turned upside down with that. We moved from Georgetown to live with my dad and stepmom in Buda. I was in a brand new place and she took me under her wing and got me through a pretty tough time in my life.”
When she’s off the clock, Belk likes to keep moving. Her favorite weekend activities include, going out for a run, fishing on the coast with her husband or spending time with family and friends. She even dabbles in interior design.
“My husband is a home-builder and in our houses I used to help him meet with the homeowner and help them pick out colors and help with the design. I enjoy that,” She adds.
