Campus Events Celebrate Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month

October is Disability Advocacy and Inclusion Month as well as National Disability Employment Awareness Month! To spread awareness about people with disabilities, Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) is hosting several events throughout the month. DisABILITY Advocacy Foundation Training
What: This engaging two-hour training provides a foundation in disability education and awareness and allows for interaction and discussion among participants. Topics include disability-related language, how to recognize and reduce barriers for people with disabilities, the perspective of disability as an aspect of diversity, and how to make a positive difference on campus for people with disabilities.
When: Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

DisABILITY Advocate Instructor Training: Creating Inclusive Learning Environments
What: Knowing how to provide accommodations to students can sometimes be a challenge. The disABILITY Advocate Faculty Training provides an opportunity for education and discussion about how to interact with and accommodate students with disabilities.The goal is to create an understanding of inclusive environments at UT while also balancing the integrity and rigor of academic courses and requirements.
When: Wednesday, Oct. 9, 9:30-11 a.m. A 30-minute Q&A will follow.

Disability Fest
What: Come learn about the different ways people with disabilities navigate through life! Come experience a wheelchair obstacle course, meet service dogs, learn about assistive technology and more! There will be free pizza and free swag!

Neurodiversity Training
What: Neurodiversity is a concept where neurological differences, such as autism, ADHD and mental health conditions, are recognized and respected as any other human variation. Come learn more about embracing neurodiversity on our campus and what you can do to work toward an environment that is more accessible and inclusive for neurodiverse students.
When: Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1:30-3 p.m.

DisABILITY Advocate 101 for the Student Employee Excellence Development (SEED) Program
What: Student employees will learn knowledge and skills to be ABLE to work more effectively and confidently with people with disabilities within their jobs on campus. This workshop uses discussion and activities to learn about disabilities and accessibility at UT and to prepare student employees to work toward a more accessible and inclusive campus.
When: Wednesday, Oct. 2, 5-6 p.m., and Tuesday, Oct. 15, 3-4 p.m.

DisABILITY as Diversity Panel Discussion
What: Come hear from UT students, faculty, and staff about how disability is represented as part of our campus diversity and where there is room for improvement. This event is part of a monthly series exploring disability across disciplines. Hosted in part by the Texas Center for Disability Studies.

Adapted Sports Night at UT
What: Have you wondered how people with disabilities participate in sports? Do you wonder if there is a sport that you can play? Come experience adapted sports for yourself! Come meet local athletes and try out different adapted sports including wheelchair basketball, beep baseball, handcycling, powersoccer and more! This event is co-hosted by Recreational Sports.
When: Thursday, Oct. 24, 6:30-9 p.m.
