UT Juneteenth 22

Juneteenth (short for June 19th) is the date in 1865 when word arrived in Galveston that slavery had ended in Texas.  In honor of this national holiday, we rounded up this list of events and celebrations happening here in Austin and across the state.


In Austin

Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom Screening
What: The Bullock Museum is hosting a free screening of “Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom,” a documentary exploring the history of Juneteenth that began in Galveston, Texas.

Juneteenth Community Parade & Festival 
What: Every year Texas Athletics partners with the Neighborhood Longhorns, the Austin community and the UT Austin community to commemorate and honor Juneteenth through broad participation in the Greater East Austen Youth Association’s Juneteenth Community Parade. 
When: Saturday, June 17, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Juneteenth Family Fun at the Carver Library
What: A community celebration featuring arts and crafts, story time, food and an engaging history lesson taught by storyteller Joan Stewart.

What: The Carver Museum presents a community cookout and music festival in celebration of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth Freedom Summit
What:
The LBJ School’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD) is hosting an event titled “Juneteenth Freedom Summit: A Reimagining of Culture, Politics and Law.” Led by CSRD Founding Director Dr. Peniel Joseph, the summit will address the history behind Juneteenth and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead to build the Beloved Community in Texas and beyond.

Juneteenth Celebration: It All Happened Here
