Dr. Leonard Moore, associate vice president for academic diversity initiatives and director of the African American Male Research Initiative in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin, will deliver a keynote address on Jan. 14 during the American Football Coaches Association annual meeting in Indianapolis in a session sponsored by the NFL Players Association.
As part of the convention, the NFL Players Association hosts a coaching symposium for former NFL players who are currently coaching, and for current and former players who want to enter the coaching ranks. During that symposium, Moore will speak on Engaging the Black Male Student-Athlete. Based upon his years of working with high-profile athletes at Ohio State, LSU, Texas, the University of Georgia, and in other programs, Dr. Moore’s interactive presentation and workshop shows coaches how to set up an effective support network for high-profile black male student-athletes that ensures success in the classroom, on the field, and in life beyond sports.
Approximately 7,000 pro, college, and high school football coaches from will converge on Indianapolis for three days of teaching, workshops, and networking. Speakers include retired UT Austin coach Mack Brown, University of Alabama coach Nick Saban, Michigan State University coach Mark Dantonio and University of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
Moore is a professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin in addition to his roles as associate vice president and director of the African American Male Research Initiative (AAMRI) within the UT Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. He has dedicated much of his career to working with African American student-athletes. His work with African American student-athletes has been highlighted on ESPN and in theNew York Times.
