5. Staff

5.1 Action Item: Offer diversity and implicit bias professional development for staff at the director level and above and increase training sessions on staff recruitment and hiring.

Summary:

  • Human Resources and the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, are partnering to develop a curriculum built around eLearning and workshops to present to a pilot group in Summer 2019. “Inclusion in the Modern Workplace” and “Managing Bias” are the first two units to be piloted.
  • HR and DDCE are also creating a Diversity and Inclusion certificate for supervisors/managers.  DDCE senior staff will pilot one of the webinars,  “Inclusive Leadership” during the summer of 2019.

5.2 Action Item: Examine and implement best practices on providing ways for unit heads to have the ability for direct appointment to director level positions and above in areas identified as underrepresented.

Summary:

  • Human Resources has evaluated the feasibility of implementation for this specific item as written, and has requested plan revisions to align with departmental movement in developing resources for succession planning, implementing career paths and competencies. Human Resources is also developing training and resources for managers on managing staff growth and development.

5.3 Action Item: Provide diversity and inclusion training and implement periodic peer-led diversity workshops for staff.

Summary:

  • Human Resources leaders are currently reviewing and evaluating the diversity courses offered in each of the units. Options being considered include offering more sessions of the current classes, combining Recruiting Basics and Hiring for a Diverse Workforce into one class, holding train-the-trainer sessions, and creating a consistent Implicit Bias course for selection committees.
  • Services for Students with Disabilities provides disABILITY Advocate training each semester which is open to faculty, staff and students and can provide on an ‘as asked’ basis to CSUs. The Gender and Sexuality Center also provides a two-session Ally training each semester on a regular basis to faculty, staff and students.
