Growing up, I was always surrounded by blessings. I have had a supportive family, a roof over my head, and never went to bed on an empty stomach. This privilege taught me the duality of humility and service, which can be put into practice by placing myself in other’s shoes and adjusting accordingly to what services might be needed. Therefore I serve to render. Being of able mind and body, I seek to encourage others whether it be through my words or actions. Most of all, I serve to understand. I feel as though a lot of issues in our society stem off of misconstrued judgment. Whether it be from lack of familiarity with the subject or plain ignorance, if we can teach ourselves and others concerns of our community through awareness and practice, maybe we can minimize conflict. I know, I, as an individual cannot make the world a better place. But I can be part of a team that makes an effort for that change. Through Alternative Breaks I hope to learn more of subjects like homelessness or minority advocacy and to witness these matters firsthand. It will be a challenge for me as I have had a different background, but I hope to gain personal growth as I contribute some part of myself into the community.
