Why I Serve Statement: I serve because I strongly believe societal factors such as socioeconomic status and consequences associated with it have strong effects on health. I desire change in order to improve the lives of all people. Medicine has become a cycle of diagnosis and treatment rather than tackling upstream approaches. I am blessed to be a part of this program and observe the effects of immigration policy on individuals who have migrated from Central America. I hope that my trip to South Texas will enable a practical lesson on understanding people who are in need of help and change.
