Why I Serve Statement:
I serve because future generations deserve to experience better society than the one we currently live in. No one deserves to be targeted or counted out because of situations outside of their control. One of my main motivations is my little brother and I know that if I feel so much love and protection for him, there are hundreds of thousands of others who feel the same about their family members and they deserve to live a life where they don’t have to worry about being discriminated against. By serving I not only get to have a hand in making someone else’s life better in some aspect, but I get a chance to show the same compassion I would want someone else to show me or my little brother. Serving others and being able to provide assistance especially in this sector of combating systemic racism motivates me to continue following my dreams and also teaches me to listen and assess the needs of others and help them out in any way that I can. Even if my service can’t change the world all at once, I know that by serving, I can learn how to put my own privilege aside and focus on the needs of others. If I am make a difference in even just one person’s life, I’ve done my job as a decent human being and I’m one step closer to changing the world.
