This manuscript draws attention to the gender gap between African American males and females in higher education. In doing so, a review of information regarding African American males from the early school years to college is discussed. Information is presented that highlights how race and gender specific issues affect the number of African American males pursuing advanced degrees that lead to careers in higher education. The manuscript examines barriers preventing African American males from pursuing advanced degrees and offers suggestions for improving participation of African American males in higher education generally and in psychology specifically.
