The Academic Service-Learning program is proud to sponsor an art installation developed by Dr. Kara Hallmark’s Visual Art Studies service-learning students in partnership with the One Million Bones project and Students Rebuild. All faculty, students, and community partners, especially those with an interest in the role of art in promoting issues of social justice, are invited to attend.
One Million Bones (OMB) is a national hands-on art project that was initiated by artist Naomi Natale in New Mexico to create awareness about the atrocities emerging from military conflict and humanitarian crises around the globe, including Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, and Burma. Through the creation of artwork bones, OMB strives to promote tangible exhibits that highlight the enormous breadth and impact of these crises.
OMB, in partnership with Students Rebuild, hopes to raise awareness about ongoing conflict and crisis around the globe, to raise money, and to educate students of all ages, using art at the center of the experience. At UT-Austin, students enrolled in Dr. Kara Hallmark’s Visual Art Studies service-learning course in the Department of Art and Art History are managing their project on campus by hosting bone-making sessions during class, at night after classes, and on campus during the day. At the same time, they are engaged in study about global military and humanitarian crises.
Attend the installation to learn more about the power of service-learning courses.
