DCC events are designed to provide various opportunities for students, staff and faculty to learn about and promote disability culture, identity, resources and community. The DCC is also proud to promote and support events hosted by our campus and community partners

Information Session about a Disability University Resource Group
Save the Date: July 27th 9-11am (specific time TBD) for an hybrid Information Session about a Disability University Resource Group for UT disabled staff and faculty. Join the listserv for details and updates!
Disability Culture Conversations (Virtual)
These monthly virtual meetups are designed to provide a space for students, faculty and staff to come together to learn about topics related to disabled identity and the disability community. Each month will be dedicated to a specific topic and will include a short overview of the topic and then allow time for conversation and discussion. Summer Disability Culture Conversations take place virtually on Thursdays 12-1pm CST. RSVP required to receive the Zoom link.

Adapted Sports and Recreation
The DCC is partnering with Austin Adapted Sports to host and participate in adapted sports opportunities in Austin over the summer. Austin Adapted Sports holds tennis and kayaking weekly; the DCC will coordinating specific UT Nights on the dates designated below.
- Wheelchair/Adapted Tennis at UT Whitaker Fields: Mondays from 6:45-8:45 starting June 12th (No tennis on June 19th due to Emancipation Day). All disability and experience levels welcome; equipment is provided. RSVP to dcc@austin.utexas.edu by Monday at noon if you plan to attend.
- Kayaking with Austin Adapted Sports at the Texas Rowing Center: Fridays from 6-8pm. Join the DCC for a UT Night on June 9th and July 14th: RSVP to dcc@austin.utexas.edu by Thursday at 5pm before the event if you plan to attend.

Community Events with the DCC
Disabled community, education and advocacy extends beyond the 40 Acres and the DCC wants to provide opportunities to build bridges between campus and community. Join the DCC in supporting these off campus events and enjoy participating with members of the UT Community. All are welcome!

Disability Culture Conversations (Virtual)

DCC Hangouts in DDCE Space (In Person)
UT Students (and faculty and staff) are invited to drop by at the monthly evening “hangout” sessions within the DDCE Commons Area on the third floor of the Student Services Building to build community with other disabled members of the UT community. Snacks, activities and conversation prompts will be provided.

Donuts, Coffee and Conversation with the DCC (In Person)
Member of the UT community are invited to stop by the DDCE Commons on the third floor of the Student Services Building for donuts, coffee and conversation with the DCC Founding Director. This come-and-go event is designed to provide an informal opportunity to network with members of the UT community and share your hopes and dreams for the DCC.

Student Sessions (Virtual)
There are so many great resources on campus but finding them all can be overwhelming! UT students are invited to come learn about some of the different resources, services and support available to disabled students on campus.

Building Community at UT (Hybrid)
One of the goals of the new Disability Cultural Center at UT is to build community and create connections for students who have similar disability experiences. At our first two Building Community sessions, we will be creating spaces for students with visual disabilities and students who use mobility equipment. Students are invited to come together to meet each other and talk about what type of future DCC programming and support would be helpful.

Disabled Student Study Sessions
The DDCE Commons (SSB 3.200) is open to students to use as a study space and provides a variety of seating and technology options. While students can use this space at any time (8am-5pm, Monday-Friday), the DCC and Disability and Access will be hosting study sessions to provide company and snacks while you study. Come and go as your schedule allows.

Raise Your Voice Advocacy Sessions with the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities (Virtual, with In Person Option)
CTD’s interactive Raise Your Voice! (RYV) events are designed to provide a functional understanding of our state’s legislative process while connecting emerging and seasoned advocates with each other. On each call, the CTD advocacy team will give a brief update on the major pieces of legislation we’ve been working on, then we’ll hold breakout discussions to gather your input and concerns or prepare to take an action. RYV Zoom calls happen every Monday at 2pm through May 22nd: Sign up to Raise Your Voice!
Join as an individual via Zoom, or, starting April 3rd, you also have the option to come to SSB 3.406 for a “watch party” with other members of the UT community.

Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Forums
The university created a standing committee, the President’s Accessibility Committee, to address institution-wide systemic issues that fall within the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The committee hosts forums every year to solicit campus input on ADA issues addressed by the campus community. While we are interested in individual situations and experiences, the committee is charged with developing solutions for broad-based concerns affecting many in our community. Crip Conversations: What 10 Years of Activism Taught Me as a Black Disabled Macro Social Worker
2023 marks 10 years since Vilissa Thompson, LMSW began her journey as a disabled macro social worker. During this time, she created Ramp Your Voice!, her organization and blog, and has engaged social workers; key stakeholders in politics and movement spaces; and fellow disabled comrades alike about the complexities of race, gender, and disability. Vilissa shares her insight with students and colleagues on what should be on their radars, and why she proudly makes good trouble in the name of social work. Hosted by the Texas Center for Disability Studies.
