West Mall Construction
Construction will begin the week of July 23 to improve the area of the West Mall between the Union Building and Goldsmith Hall. The project will replace the existing fountain with signage, hardscape and trees. This project was initiated by students in the Class of 2017, who also were part of the concept design process. The sign will be similar to the stone sign at the south end of University Avenue. It is intended to serve as a gateway marker and a location for photo opportunities. The hardscape will consist of permeable pavers, and four new live oak trees will extend the row of trees in the center of the West Mall. The construction area will extend beyond the circumference of the fountain and will therefore alter pedestrian circulation patterns in the area. See the attached pedestrian access map. Routes will change at various times during construction. Please be alert to signage in the area directing pedestrians around the work. Construction is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2018. This project is managed by UT Austin Project Management and Construction Services.
Speedway Mall Closure
Speedway Mall will be closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic from 24th Street south to the Gates Dell Complex overnight on Thursday, June 21. The closure will start at 7 p.m., and the Mall will reopen by 7 a.m. on June 22. This closure is related to construction at Welch Hall. The contractor is using a temporary crane positioned in the Speedway Mall to install a tower crane within the Welch Hall construction site.
