Maria de los Angeles Villarreal is a second year social work student from the border towns of Eagle Pass, Texas and Piedras Negras, Mexico. Growing up in these diverse environments rooted in her an interest for social justice. She had the opportunity to study abroad in London over the summer in a social and economic justice Maymester where she deepened her passion for traveling and discovering different societies in the world. Additionally she developed skills such as global leadership and cultural competency. Back in Austin, she is part of the Communications team for TEDxUTAustin where she helps writes and helps spread important ideas. Additionally, she is research assistant in a Self Harm Study among Youth of Color. In the past she worked as a legislative aide under The House of Representatives in The Texas State Capitol translating documents, meeting with organizations and researching on education related bills. She will use her experiences to advocate for others and be a part of the DDCE Global Student Fellows.
