Overview of 2021 – 2022 Experiences

During the 2021-2022 academic year, from the official launch of Inclusive Campus Support on October 5, 2021 through August 31, 2022, Inclusive Campus Support received a total of 70 experience forms. The number of experience forms increased over 100% from Fall 2021 to Spring/Summer 2022, from 21 to 49 experience forms. Most of the experiences submitted during the academic year (73%) were identified as occurring on campus with 19% occurring online and 9% occurring off campus.

Awareness of Inclusive Campus Support and its functions affects the number of experience forms received and means that raw numbers of experience forms must be interpreted with caution (i.e., a higher volume of experiences submitted does not necessarily signal a higher volume of experiences occurring). In the following section, the 70 experience forms received during 2021-2022 are explored in greater depth.

Of the 70 total experience forms received, 44% indicate experiences occurring during the year 2022, with 41% occurring in 2021, and 6% occurring in 2020. Most of the experience forms were submitted during the months of February 2022 (50%) and October 2021 (29%). Overall, most (96%) of the campus climate experiences received are “concerning” (vs. “helpful”).

UT Austin Affiliation of Individuals Who Submitted Experience Forms

Students submitted the most experience forms at 59% while 30% were submitted by staff members, 16% by faculty, 10% by alumni, 1% by community members, and 1% identified affiliation as other. *

Types of Experiences Submitted

The most prevalent type of experience submitted involves verbal comment (44%). Other common experience types are accessibility (23%), and written comment (14%). *

Identity Categories Related to Experiences Submitted

As shown in Figure 3, most experiences are based on identity categories of race/ethnicity (39%), followed by gender (29%), and disability (23%). *

Overview of 2021 – 2022 Consultations

In addition to experience forms, a separate online form can be submitted to request consult/peer support regarding a campus climate experience. Individuals can provide information using this form to be contacted by a staff member from Inclusive Campus Support who can assist with questions regarding campus climate experiences and can provide support including information about university/community resources.

From October 5, 2021 through August 31, 2022, Inclusive Campus Support received 21 consult requests from students, staff, faculty, and community via the online form, email, or phone. Of these requests, 43% were submitted by students, 38% were submitted by staff, 10% were submitted by faculty, 10% were submitted by community members, and 5% were submitted by alumni. Some of the consultation topics included: guidance for interpersonal interactions and conflict; employee support; gender bias; curriculum best practices; inclusive student organization leadership; observance of religious holidays; and graffiti.

Semester Summaries

Fall 2021

During the Fall 2021 semester (October 5 – December 31), 21 experience forms and 3 requests for consult were submitted via online forms and email by students, staff, and faculty. Peer-support was provided by individual consult and sharing relevant information and resources.

  • Most (86%) of the campus climate experiences are “concerning” (vs. “helpful”).
  • Sixty-seven percent of experience forms were submitted by students; 19% were submitted by faculty and 19% were submitted by staff. *
  • Most experiences involve concerns regarding verbal comment (33%), are related to something “other” than the options provided (33%); or involve written comment (33%), and 19% involve a presentation. *
  • Almost half of the experiences are based on race/ethnicity (48%), while many are based on political affiliation (38%), viewpoint (29%), and national origin (29%), respectively. *
  • Most (86%) of the campus climate experiences were indicated as occurring on campus, with 10% occurring off campus and 5% occurring online.

Spring/Summer 2022

During the spring semester (January 1 – May 31) and summer semester (June 1 – August 31), 49 experience forms and 18 requests for consult were submitted via online request forms and email by students, staff, and faculty. Peer-support was provided by consult and sharing relevant university information and resources.

  • All (100%) of the campus climate experiences are “concerning” (vs. “helpful”).
  • Fifty-five percent of experience forms were submitted by students; 35% were submitted by staff; and 14% were submitted by faculty. *
  • Most experiences involve verbal comment (49%), accessibility (31%), and presentation (10%). *
  • Many experiences are based on race/ethnicity (35%), gender (33%), disability (27%), gender expression (18%), and sexual orientation (16%). *
  • Most (67%) of the campus climate experiences were indicated as occurring on campus, 24% occurring online, and 8% occurring off campus.
