The Multicultural Engagement Center is offering a course for Fall 2023:
ALD 118C • Leadership as Activism
10670 • MEC full-time staff
Meets W 2:00PM-3:00PM RLP 1.108
The Multicultural Engagement Center has served as a hub for student leaders for over 30 years to explore identity, purpose, and activism. Students that participate in our student leadership program gain invaluable skills in event planning, interpersonal communication, and community organizing.
However, on many college campuses, activism and/or challenging the status quo is often viewed as a nuisance, as something that must be controlled and diminished (Farago, 2018). This course, instead, endeavors to amplify the potential for student leadership development, moral development, and the increased political and civic engagement that activism fosters (McShan, ND).
This course has been designed with the emerging and established leader activist in mind and will utilize critical pedagogical approaches that are both collaborative and integrative. Students that complete our course will be given priority in participating in the MEC’s 2024 Leadership Exchange to the historic city of San Diego, CA.
Leadership as Activism is looking for:
- Students from all classifications, majors, and experiences
- Students interested in developing or strengthening a leader activist identity
- Students working to develop critical skills that will contribute to their roles in business, medicine, law, the nonprofit sector, education, and other leadership roles
- Students interested in developing praxis for information learned in the classroom
