For the second year in a row Project MALES in partnership with the Austin Independent School District (AISD) kicked off its mentorship this week at all of our five sites, Webb Middle School, Gus Garcia Male Leadership Academy, Lanier, Reagan, and Travis High Schools. Our kick off week activities included a pizza party where about 37 of our UT undergraduate students mentors and mentoring staff, introduced Project MALES to our middle and high school students, at their respective school campuses. During this event mentees were introduced to the Project MALES Student Mentoring Program through icebreakers and introductions of mentors.
This year the Project MALES Student Mentoring Program is extending its partnership with the Austin Independent School District (AISD) by adding one more mentoring site. Starting this fall semester, Project MALES Student Mentoring Program will begin mentoring at Gus Garcia Male Leadership Academy. In addition, our new mentors and work-study students will enroll in the Impacting Males through Peer Advising College Tracks (IMPACT), our service-learning course. Our student mentors will continue to create dialogue around issues impacting young men of color in our communities. We will also continue to work on mentor development as well as developing a range of topics and activities focusing on college and career pathways after high school for our mentees.
We are looking forward to another successful semester. Stay tuned to learn more about our mentors and our school sites; we will be profiling one school campus each week for the following five weeks.
