The Project MALES Student Mentoring Program is off to a great start in the 2016-17 academic year. This year we are continuing our mentoring partnerships with the Austin Independent School District (AISD) in the following schools; Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy, Martin Middle School, Mendez Middle School, and Webb Middle School. We are also at the following high schools; Lanier High School, Reagan Early College High School, and Travis Early College High School). This semester we have also added Lyndon B. Johnson Reagan Early College High School as one of our new mentoring sites. We plan to add an additional middle school and high school during the Spring 2017 semester. Our curriculum will focus on the themes of Brotherhood, Leadership, and College and Career Readiness and all program activities center on these pillars that anchor all our mentoring initiatives with boys and men of color. Our Mentoring Site Coordinators Jorge Rodriguez, Rodrigo Aguayo, Enrique Aguayo and Jorge Segovia are each assigned two sites to lead along with a team of UT undergraduate student mentors to conduct our weekly mentoring sessions. Our UT undergraduate student mentors are trained in a two credit service-learning course concurrent with placement in a school site. In addition, our Project MALES Student Organization lead by student mentor program leaders have planned many engaging and dynamic activities throughout the academic year including our monthly platica series that features academic and community leaders who work in the Austin area. Below we spotlight our eight schools and the PM team who lead our group and one-on-one mentoring activities at each site.
