This summer Project MALES (Mentoring to Achieve Latino Educational Success) and Con Mi MADRE (Mothers and Daughters Raising Expectations) will co-host the 2017 Summer Leadership Camp on July 19-22, 2017. The four-day event is open to young men and women from Austin ISD middle and high schools. This years theme is “Resiliency Through Leadership.” The Summer Leadership Camp will feature four days of workshops and sessions that focus on building leadership skills, communication skills, and creative activities. Our collective mission centers on improving educational outcomes and opportunities for young male and female students of color in the Central Texas region.
Project MALES and Con Mi MADRE are excited to welcome one of this year’s Summer Camp Keynote speakers Dr. Jose Enriquez, Executive Director of Latinos in Action (LIA). Dr. Enriquez is an immigrant who was born in El Salvador and grew up in East L.A. He attributes much of his success to his hard-working mother who sacrificed everything to give him and his siblings a better life. Most recently, Latinos in Action was honored as a Bright Spot by the White House Center for Excellence in Hispanic Education. LIA currently serves over 100 schools throughout Utah, Idaho, Washington, Arizona, Florida, and Texas. LIA students are civically engaged young men and women who aspire to better their lives through education, leadership, professionalism, and service. This event is made possible by the generous funding from the Kresge Foundation. For more information visit our website at: http://diversity.utexas.edu/projectmales/
