The Project MALES Fall 2017 Pláticas series will continue this Monday, October 16, 2017. Our guest speaker is Angela Ward. Angela oversees the Austin Independent School District (AISD) focus on Cultural Proficiency & Inclusiveness and Restorative Practices. Prior to leading this effort as a district administrator, she served as campus administrator, teacher leader, and classroom teacher. As an expert on differentiation of curriculum, she led her district in writing the first curriculum documents and continues to support culturally responsive curriculum development in Austin ISD.
Angela served four years on the Learning Forward Texas (LFTX) Board of Directors, an affiliate of the international organization whose purpose is engaging adult learners in meaningful, effective professional learning. In collaboration with University of Texas (Austin) partners, Angela presented AISD Central Office Cultural Proficiency work at the 2012 Critical Race Studies in Education Conference, Columbia University. She also presented Cultural Proficiency: The Journey to Systemic Change at Texas’ inaugural Cultural Proficiency Institute in 2013, a subsequent institute in 2014 and contributed a chapter on education to the book Addressing Racial Disproportionality and Disparities in Human Services, Columbia University Press. Angela is a graduate of Saint Edward’s University in Austin Texas (1995), and received her Master’s from Southwest Texas State (2002).
Currently she is a Ph.D. Student at the University of Texas (Austin) studying Curriculum & Instruction with a focus on Cultural Studies in Education. Angela has contributed to a forthcoming book chapter focused on Black preservice teachers on race and racism in the millennial era: Considerations for teacher education. She is a member of the national Collaborative of Academic & Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) Equity Working Group, served on the Education Committee of the Mayor’s Task Force on Institutional Racism, is a member of the E3 Alliance: Eliminating Achievement and Opportunity Gaps committee, and a leader in the Greater Austin Area My Brother’s Keeper Violence Prevention & Second Chances Committee.
