On Friday February 9, 2018 we held our Spring 2018 Consortium Institute. This event was hosted by our partners at the University of Houston-Downtown. We were joined by educational and student leaders from ISD’s, community colleges, and universities from across the state of Texas. Our agenda included the introduction of our new advisory council members, consortium updates, a local partners/student panel, networking lunch, and breakout sessions by region and educational sectors. Highlights from the event include, the TAMU team led workshops working with Beta site institutions about planning the implementation of their CBTAs. In addition, the UT Austin team was able to work with new members and introduce them to the Equity Root Cause Analysis tool for them to bring back to their institutions. As always, the student panel was a huge success, with students sharing powerful testimonies about the impact of men of color programs in their academic success.
Additionally, the advisory council created three committees; program committee, membership committee, and the fundraising committee. Each committee is described below including its members.
Program Committee serves to lead and help design programs and agenda for the Texas Male Student Leadership Summit and Consortium Institute. The committee shall help identify the direction or focus of the Consortium each year.
Program Committee Members: Archie Wortham, Chair; Carlos Amaya, Liaison; Rodrick Moore; Rachel Naugle
Membership Committee serves to ensure that membership within the consortium is active and continuously growing. To identify new potential members in ISD’s, Community Colleges, Universities, and non-profit organizations. This committee shall also be responsible for identifying potential new advisory council members.
Membership Committee Members: Melissa McGuire, Liaison; Mona Aldana-Ramirez, Liaison; Ricardo Villarreal; Heron Cavazos
Fundraising Committee serves to lead the board in efforts that attract money and services needed to carry out the mission of the organization. This committee may be divided into sub-committees that work together to achieve this goal.
Fundraising Committee Members: Richard Armenta and Jerry Wallace
We want to thank President Juan Sánchez Muñoz for his warm and inspiring welcome and Dr. Jerry Wallace for being an incredible host and for coordinating all the logistics to allow us to do the Insitute at UH-Downtown.
