Project MALES hosted its third annual Summer Leadership Academy at The University of Texas at Austin on July 20-21, where 40 young men from several districts in the Austin area including Austin ISD, KIPP Public Schools, Round Rock ISD and Del Valle ISD, got to experience what college is like. The Project MALES Summer Leadership Academy featured two days of workshops and sessions around our five themes: brotherhood, leadership, college & career readiness, health & wellness, and identity while building leadership and communication skills.
Highlights from the 2018 Project MALES Summer Leadership Academy include:
- A tour of the University of Texas Visualization Lab (VisLab) facilitated by Rosalia Gomez, Education & Outreach Manager.
- This year we introduced “Identity” as our fifth theme which is part of our critical mentoring curriculum and one of the central themes of our Leadership Academy. Our identity session was led by Grant Loveless, Assistant of Student Services at Austin Community College.
- Our “brotherhood” session was facilitated in partnership with Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity.
- Our Hip Hop and Poetry session was led by Bavu Blakes and Jeffrey Da’Shade Johnson.
