For the 11th Consortium Institute, the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color headed towards West Texas for the first time to El Paso Community College. El Paso Community College has been a key player in the Consortium since its founding.
Dr. William Serrata, President of El Paso Community College, was honored at the Fall 2018 Consortium Institute as one of its founders and for his continued advocacy and support of the Consortium. As in previous institutes, we were joined by educational and student leaders from ISD’s, community colleges, and universities from across the state of Texas. However, this institute had our largest ISD representation to date, with many of the El Paso region ISD’s joining the Consortium.
On our agenda this year, we had Dr. Francisco Solis, Dean of Performance Excellence for San Antonio College (SAC), present on Strategic and Business Planning. We continued that morning with discussions about the Institutional Questionnaire we administered, and the results from that survey. These discussions gave institutions a better way to approach their own needs and to utilize the resources that the consortium can provide. As we continued the day, the El Paso Community College Culinary Arts Program hosted a wonderful lunch as we had our Local Partner and Student Panel. Participants of the panel included students and staff from El Paso Community College and local school districts.
To close out the day the UT & TAMU Team presented on some of the Statewide and
Institutional Data that had been collected. As a reminder, the Consortium recently put out two digests focused on African American and Hispanic male graduation and enrollment rates. If you would like more information about the research digest click here.
We then broke into two discussion groups focused on the Meeting the Needs of Men of Color at ISD’s and Male of Color Initiatives. Overall, we had a great Consortium Institute at El Paso Community College.
We want to thank President Dr. William Serrata for his warm and inspiring welcome and Dr. Carlos Amaya for being an incredible host, along with his team Dominic Lannutti and Norma E. Hinojos, for coordinating all the logistics and assisting us with the Consortium Institute at El Paso Community College.
