Over the years, Project MALES has been fortunate to have new graduate students join our PM família. This Spring, we are excited to welcome two new graduate student coordinators, Sascha Fischel-Freeman and Mark Chavez.

Sascha Fischel-Freeman is currently a first-year Master’s student in Cultural Studies in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Community Studies from Evergreen State College. Since then, he spent several years in Venezuela conducting youth work with CECOSESOLA. He previously worked as the Student and Family Support Coordinator and Homeless Liaison with the Shelton School District before starting at UT. His research interests include: youth organizing and political action; critical pedagogy; trauma, healing and restorative practices; and indigenous knowledge systems.
Sascha’s Quote: “Project MALES is like a family, a sense of community with undergraduate students and graduate students following a similar passion. This experience has helped me further strengthen my desire to conduct community-based education with youth.”

Mark Chavez is currently a first year Master’s student at Texas State University majoring in Student Affairs in Higher Education. He is currently pursuing a career in working on restorative practices in institutions of higher education and educating young students on tolerance and inclusion. He completed his Bachelor’s in Arts in Animal Science with a minor in Biochemistry at Texas State University. He is originally from El Paso, Texas. He is happy to join the team this semester and assist in Project MALES’ initiatives and goals. His research interests include diversity and inclusion, student conduct, and health and fitness.
Mark’s Quote: “I believe that my passion and drive to bring about change in our society is what drove me to go into student affairs in order to be a part of the respect and inclusivity that we need to teach and see more of right now, especially in our youth.”
Please join us in welcoming Sascha and Mark to our Project MALES team as we work to support and empower our middle and high school young men of color in the greater Austin area.
