The 2019 Project MALES Summer Leadership Academy took place on June 28-29, 2019, and we hosted over 50 middle school and high school boys from Central Texas for our fourth annual Academy. Our leadership academy included campus tours, sports activities and incorporated an overnight stay in the UT residence halls to help demystify the college experience. We also included an array of workshop presentations led by UT student and community leaders focusing on leadership skills, building brotherhood, and developing college prep and career seeking skills. Other highlights of the two day convening were the cultural arts and spoken word sessions. Our Project MALES summer academy addresses the lack of programming in Austin for our students. We know from decades of research that summer learning loss is a real phenomenon, particularly for low-income students and male students of color. You can find our Academy agenda here, Project MALES 2019 Summer Leadership Academy. We are already planning our next Leadership Academy for summer 2020, so stay tuned for more information on this web page.
