We are thrilled to announce that the Project MALES Student Mentoring Program has been recognized as a 2019 Examples of Excelencia finalist in the baccalaureate category! The 16 Finalists were selected from among 166 programs across 32 states, DC and Puerto Rico, nominated in four categories: associates, baccalaureate, graduate and community-based organization (CBO).
Examples of Excelencia is a national effort by Excelencia in Education that brings attention to evidence-based practices that work for Latino students in higher education. Excelencia will recognize four Examples of Excelencia, one in each of four categories: associate, baccalaureate, graduate, and community-based organizations on October 24, 2019 at their annual Celebración de Excelencia event hosted in Washington, DC.
The Excelencia in Education recognition is due to the successful outcomes of the Project MALES Student Mentoring Program. Since its inception in 2011, 203 undergraduate mentors have participated in the program, with 178 identifying as Latino. Ninety percent of the students who have served as mentors have graduated or are on track do so. Project MALES also supports graduate students to persist onto PhD programs and professional careers, and has graduated 14 PhD students to date. We are proud to be recognized for our work supporting undergraduate students and the 250 male students of color we serve at 18 middle and high schools in East Austin.
