This past Wednesday, October 15,2019, Dr. Emmet Campos and Rodrigo Aguayo visited San Antonio to kick off SACMEN’s Platica, Guest Speaker series for Fall 2019. SACMEN is San Antonio College’s Male Empowering Network and a proud Consortium partner. Dr. Campos and Rodrigo presented an overview of our mentoring program, stressed the importance of empowering men of color, and discussed with SACMEN the five pillars of Project MALES (PM) through a restorative circle activity.
SACMEN officers and members, SAC faculty and staff, and the Project MALES team
Project MALES is extremely grateful to be able to share with SACMEN some of the knowledge and experiences that we have learned throughout the nine years of the Project MALES Mentoring Program. We are excited to be part of the expansion of the Project MALES Mentoring Program, with SACMEN spearheading the efforts in San Antonio.
These efforts directly tie into the first-ever PM Mentoring training outside of UT Austin that happened on Saturday, September 28th at El Paso Community College (EPCC) hosted by EPPC’s very own Tejano Empowerment Network (TEN) and Ysleta Independent School District. Throughout this full-day training, members of TEN, EPPC and Ysleta ISD engaged in dialogue on how to better serve men of color through the implementation of mentoring services at middle schools throughout YISD. We are very thankful for the support of Dr. Carlos Amaya and Dr. Dominic Lannutti, TEN student members, and El Paso Community College. We would also like to extend gratitude for the support by Ysleta ISD, Dr. Catherine Kennedy and Abigail Tarango. This is a new chapter for Project MALES and the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color as we embark on our statewide efforts to expand mentoring for boys and men of color throughout Texas.
