On Friday, Nov. 1st, 2019, the University of Houston-Downtown hosted Project MALES 13th Consortium Institute. Dr. Emmet Campos, MC and Dr. Victor Saenz opened the event, and Dr. Juan Muñoz President of the University of Houston-Downtown provided the official “Welcome”, followed by a Consortium Advisory Council Report from Dr. Michael Nava, chair of the Advisory Council. Dr. Nava also introduced new Advisory Council members; Armando Ponce (Texas Southmost College), Delma Olivarez (UT Rio Grande College), Geraldo Guerra (San Antonio College), and Manuel Maldonado (South San ISD).
Dr. Jerrod Henderson, University of Houston keynote theme, “I Am Not An Anomaly, It’s In My DNA” underscored the goals of the Symposium, “To support collegiate pathways and alliances between local ISDs, Houston Community College and the University of Houston-Downtown”.

After the keynote, Dr. Victor Saenz and Dr. Emmet Campos provided Consortium updates since our last Institute in February at Baylor University. The UT Austin Research team, Jase Kugiya and Jorge Burmicky, led a session on data exploration focused on data from the Houston Education Service Center. For the afternoon schedule of activities, Rodrigo Aguayo and Dr. Campos moderated a Student and Local Partners Panel that included students from HIASD, HCC and UHD and UT Austin. Local partners and practitioners from the grate Houston area also shared insights about their collaborative work with our Consortium hosts. We ended the day with a number of breakout sessions on a range of topics, ‘Promising Practices of Initiatives on your Campus, “CBTA Development and Updates,” and ‘Bridging Research to Praxis: Key Takeaways from our Research and Policy Briefs’.
