On February 27, 2020 the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color held its Spring 2020 consortium institute. The event was hosted by Austin Community College at its Eastview campus. The focus of the institute was intersectionality and how best to apply it in work with Men of Color.
Dr. Emmet Campos, MC along with Dr. Guillermo Martinez and Dr.Victor Sáenz opened up the event with a warm welcome and updates about the consortium. Following the introduction and welcome, guest speaker Dr. Nino Rodriguez delivered his Keynote Address “Deconstructing “Male Students of Color”: Going Beyond Race and Gender to Achieve Freedom from the Educational Survival Complex.
Leading into the afternoon Dr. Jorge Burmicky and Mona Aldana-Ramirez gave a data presentation, which was followed by breakout sessions on a variety of topics “Social Emotional Well- being: The Foundational Role of Cultural Identity” led by Dr. Manuel Zamarripa ACC, “Gender Role Conflict and Strain” led by Dr. Nino Rodriguez UT Austin, “Sanctioning Male Students of Color” led by Dr. Dorado Kinney and Mervin Jones ACC, and “Multicultural Identities in 2020” led by Jim Molloy.
The afternoon was closed out by Dr.Luis Ponjuán who received the day and made an appeal to attendees to involve their institution’s leadership in the work of the consortium.
