New Research Project Supported by Trellis Foundation
The South Texas/Rio Grande Valley Project: Improving the Educational Outcomes of Male Students of Color in South Texas Border Postsecondary Institutions During the Pandemic Era will develop and implement a research-in-action partnership between Project MALES/Texas Education Consortium and South Texas & RGV postsecondary institutions over the next two years. We will target two primary project activities: Institutional Collaborations and Research Infrastructure. This collaborative multi-prong approach will measure and address impacts as a result of the ongoing pandemic that has amplified the historical disparities in educational access, persistence, and outcomes in higher education for male students of color. Recent national reports found that male students of color, compared to their peers, had significant declines in enrollment rates in community colleges and four-year institutions (National Clearinghouse, 2020).
Based on our long-term and productive collaboration we are proposing multiple, intersecting initiatives focused on addressing the new and pressing Covid-19 related barriers that have contributed to enrollment declines for male students of color within the South Texas/Rio Grande Valley region. We seek to address this growing challenge to our state by leveraging our existing institutional partnerships.
