This session, inspired by the Grammy winning artist Tyler, the Creator and Washington DC punk band, Minor Threat, is designed to teach incoming or aspiring college students about the importance of staying true to oneself in the face of adversity. This session will also talk about the different ways one can be a leader and look to combat the oft-mistaken thought that one has to be extroverted and outgoing to be a leader among others. We will look at how some famous men of color stayed true to themselves in very white dominated spaces and led different revolutions within their fields and how they can achieve the same results when leading and/or going to college.

Students will learn how to plan their college schedules in and out of the classroom to maximize their time a the university. Attendees will learn how to build a great schedule each year, seek out challenging internships, conduct research as an undergraduate and to study abroad. The four year plan model will be introduced so that students can plan out each year in academia successfully. Students will be encouraged to seek out student organizations and become leaders in those organizations.

You may only know of PBS from your days of watching PBS KIDS but PBS has content for all ages as the sole national network of free non-commercial video for all Americans. Moreover, we have data on media uses by all Americans, and we’re happy to share with with our communities, because we want screen practices to be healthy and part of a balanced life. Come to this session to hear about young people’s media consumption and to reflect on your own media uses, especially in the context of family life.

Each and everyone of us is a leader because we have an ability to others. One way we do that is through service. As men of color, we are minimized and marginalized, which can undermine our motivations to make a difference, because we are often indoctrinated that we “aren’t good enough.” To be a champion and ally and to uplift our people of color, we must have an understanding of our greatness and ability to make an impact through our values and purpose.
12 – Moving Bodies, Moving Minds: ReThinking Space, Gender, and Movement ❉ | Dr. Sergio Barrera | WCP 2.120
In this movement workshop, the participants will engage in a series of exercises such as walking, standing, and gesturing with the purpose of developing a consciousness about how we move in gendered ways. In addition, after every exercise we will speak about where or how they acquired these movements with an effort to speak about bodily movements as structured systems that are co-constructed, taught, and intergenerational. Lastly, we will challenge each other to think creatively about alternative ways to moving and occupying space that can be more accepting and empathetic towards others and ourselves.

What is success and how do you achieve it? In this session we will discuss various measures of success to begin the thought process of defining success for yourself. We will also discuss methods to achieve your defined measure of success and create a frame work to help you on your path to success.

“Great teamwork is the only way we create the breakthroughs that define our careers.” – Pat Riley. When you need advice on a decision, support learning a new skill, or a recommendation for a job who do you turn to? College is the time to develop your group of advocates who will guide you in your professional journey. In this presentation, students will learn what mentors and sponsors are and how they can start building their professional team in college, internships, and future careers.

In the ever growing virtual world our ability to build networks has massively expanded. During the covid-19 pandemic it became clear how important that access had become. In this session we will be examining our hobbies and how they can become gateways to maintaining mental health, establishing effective self-care, and building self-identity. We will then be examining our social media use by identifying unique pathways to using your hobbies online, creating content that builds your online networks, and the value gained by sharing your passions & hobbies with those who share your interests. Whether you are looking to start an E-sports team, create cooking content, connect with other anime fans, create fitness videos, or become a public speaker we all share a similar goal – to build a network of passionate individuals!

Despite Latinxs steadily rising in number among the United States population, these students have been systematically excluded from the study of intercollegiate athletics. With the rising numbers of Latinxs in the proportion of U.S. population, higher education, and the NCAA, it is important to learn about the path of Latinx athletes to the NCAA Division I level. Thus, the purpose of this presentation will highlight the recruitment experiences of NCAA Division I Latinx college athletes. This session will incorporate the overlooked stories of Latinx college athletes and expose the existing systems of power and privilege that limit Latinxs’ access to college athletics. Specifically, this session will highlight the following: 1. What sources of support exist for Latinx college athletes along recruitment pathways to NCAA Division I sports? What youth experiences do Latinx college athletes attribute for their ability to be recruited to NCAA Division I athletics? Ultimately, this session aims to offer some insight into Latinx college athletes’ participation in the NCAA and how studies need to examine their perceptions and experiences in college athletics.
