The 26th Annual Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights ended on Friday evening with the Heman Marion Sweatt Legacy Award ceremony. This year, Machree Garrett Gibson, the first female African American president of the Texas Exes and partner in the law firm Graydon Gibson & Brown, L.L.P. was honored.
Gibson spoke from the heart about the support that brought her to The University of Texas at Austin and that she has received throughout her career. Gibson’s father, Felix, wasn’t allowed by law to attend UT in 1954 so he went to University of Utah. But, as Gibson told the crowd of about 200, he loved The University of Texas. She closed the ceremony by accepting the award in her late father’s name. Read more by Lynn Underhill in The Alcalde.
