Student Leadership Ecosystem

WiSTEM High School Camps provide high school students with the opportunity to explore STEM career paths, gain hands-on STEM experiences, connect with STEM role models, and experience an in-depth and interactive overview of STEM majors offered at UT Austin. Camp Counselors assist with program delivery, provide perspectives on academic and campus life, lead a cohort of about 10 students, facilitate STEM-related activities and enforce all camp guidelines.

Ideal applicants should be:
-Positive, outgoing, flexible
-Responsible, mature & extremely well organized
-Able to work well in a team environment & succeed in a classroom/camp atmosphere
-Excellent communicators with strong interpersonal & leadership skills
-Able to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering or math
-In good academic & disciplinary standing

Applications open in the spring semester for summer employment and are shared on various WiSTEM communication channels.

Peer Coaches work on a team of 12-14 to mentor WiSTEM Living Learning Community (LLC) first year STEM students living in our community in Kinsolving. Peer Coaches work for a total of 5 hours a week (2 hours mentoring, 2 hours programming, 1 hour staff meeting) during the fall and spring semesters. Preference is given to applicants who participated in the WiSTEM LLC as first year students.

-Able to work well in a team environment
-Excellent communicators with strong interpersonal & leadership skills
-Able to connect with first year students as mentors
-In good academic & disciplinary standing

WiSTEM Support Squad Mentors are student volunteers who agree to mentor small groups (2-6) of incoming first year students for the fall and spring semesters. Mentors help first year students develop a sense of belonging, ease the transition from high school and provide a supportive STEM community. Mentors have the opportunity to develop leadership, communication and mentoring skills.

Students are organized into groups based on college/major and connect 2-3 hours per month as well as attend meetings/events/training during the year.

Applications open in the spring semester and are shared on various WiSTEM communication channels.

WiSTEM Program Assistants support WiSTEM programming, coordinate social media, organize materials, and serve as generalists delivering WiSTEM programs.

Lead STEM gender equity focused student organizations in a variety of roles. Participation in the WiSTEM Student Leadership Ecosystem offer leaders:

  • dedicated Slack Channel for org leaders to connect/communicate
  • WiSTEM monthly eNewsletters to alumni & industry for volunteer requests
  • WiSTEM monthly eNewsletters to current students for org promotion
  • Leadership & Communication Workshops catalog for org use
  • A centralized list of Leadership Ecosystem orgs
  • WiSTEM Staff for guidance/consultations
  • Access to a wide network of speakers, coaches, alumni and role models for organization programming needs Corporate Packet / Fundraising Support
  • Access to mini-grants/materials for programming/events
  • Mentorship and guidance for student leaders and organizations
  • A peer network to facilitate connections, coalitions and collaborations across organizations 
  • Ecosystem wide leadership training and workshops for STEM student leaders to develop/refine leadership and communication skills as well as strategies for increasing student engagement in their organization

WiSTEM Outreach Ambassadors are current undergraduate STEM students who serve as representatives of the WiSTEM community. Ambassadors participate in a wide range of activities and initiatives, including serving as presenters, facilitators, and hosts at a variety of school-wide events on campus or in the community, as well as panelists, event coordinators, guest speakers, small group facilitators, leadership retreat facilitators, tour guides, student liaisons, outreach event participants and other positions for WiSTEM.
