Peer Coaches

Women in STEM Living Learning Community Mentors

Peer Coaches work as a team to mentor WiSTEM Living Learning Community (LLC) first-year undergraduate STEM students living in our community at Kinsolving. We are looking for students from all STEM majors and will be hiring 5-8 new Peer Coaches and a Peer Coach Coordinator for the 2022-23 academic year.

What do Peer Coaches do?

Peer Coaches support the WiSTEM LLC programming by being a mentor, organizing weekly programming, and holding office hours. Peer Coaches work for a total of 5 hours a week for $10/hour.

Responsibilities include:

– Plan and execute weekly events and programs for LLC students
-Mentor students individually and in small groups
-Work collaboratively with LLC team
-Support LLC Resident Assistants
-Other duties and assignments as assigned/needed

Weekly schedule:

-2 hours/week for mentoring/office hours
-2 hours/week for programs/socials
-1 hour/week for Peer Coach/Team Meeting

Night, weekend, and flexible work schedules are required.

What are other Peer Coach resposibilities?

Peer Coaches are required to attend several training and planning retreats:

-WiSTEM LLC Orientation meeting in the Spring after being hired to meet each other, review Peer Coach expectations, and start thinking about the upcoming year’s plans.
-Fall Planning Retreat to finalize plans and programming for that semester.
-End of the Fall semester review retreat to discuss Fall successes, opportunities for growth, and January planning.
-Spring Planning Retreat to finalize plans and programming for that semester.

Other big events Peer Coaches attend/coordinate:

-WiSTEM LLC Fall Welcome
-WiSTEM LLC Spring Welcome
-STEM Girl Day – Outreach Event
-WiSTEM LLC Year-End Celebration

Note: There will be a mandatory community meeting once/twice a month on Sunday evening. Peer Coaches are required to attend.

What are Peer Coach Coordinators?

Peer Coach Coordinators take the lead on preparing and coordinating Peer Coach responsibilities, organize programming, and are the liaison between Peer Coaches and WiSTEM office.
Peer Coach Coordinators work for a total of 7-8 hours a week for $12/hour.

In addition to Peer Coach Duties listed above, responsibilities include:

-Manage communications between Peer Coaches and WiSTEM office
-Manage LLC weekly schedule and programming
-Lead team meetings
-Coordinate small group assignments
-Assist with the following year’s recruitment of participants

Weekly schedule:

-2 hours/week mentoring/office hours
-2 hours/week programs/socials
-1 hour/week Peer Coach/Team Meeting
-1 hour/week meeting with WiSTEM Office
-2 hour/week Preparation for meetings, events, and/or small group assignments (at the start of each semester)

What is the application process?

Students can apply to be a Peer Coach and/or Peer Coach Coordinator using the same application. All qualifications and requirements listed below are the same for both roles. Students can hold another position on campus (such as a tutor, lab assistant, etc.).

The successful candidate will be a:

-Proactive self-starter who can work collaboratively and independently
-Problem solver with a yes-and mindset
-Customer/client service mindset
-Supporter of existing programs with a continuous improvement mindset

Required Qualifications:

-undergraduate student
-currently enrolled at UT Austin
-degree-seeking STEM major
-good academic standing

Preferred Qualifications, desired but not required:

-Experience living in Kinsolving
-Experience living in the WiSTEM LLC

2nd Round Interviews with WiSTEM (concurrently): March 20th – March 31st
